Neil Baasten
Boys Varsity
Coach Baasten

Neil is in his fourth year as the Varsity Head coach of the Hoover Boys soccer Program.  Last season, the team had a record of 10-6-1 with eight shut outs and only 11 goals total given up during the regular season. Prior to joining the coaching staff at Hoover, he was the varsity coach for St. Thomas Aquinas boys' program from 1988 - 2003; compiling a record of 170 - 87 - 34. In those sixteen years, St. Thomas Aquinas was the GASSCA Independent III League Champion in 1990, 1991, and 1992 and the Tri-County League Champion in 1998.


Neil was voted the State Division III Coach of the Year [Private/Parochial] and the State Ron Pinsenschaum Award Winner in 2003. He was selected as the Greater Akron District Division II Coach of the Year 1990, 1992, and 1998 and the Greater Akron District Division Coach of the Year in 2003. He has received the Coach of the Year honors on five different occasions.

Neil graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame with a B.B.A. Degree in Accounting. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law. He is the co-managing partner of the law firm of Baasten, McKinley & Co. LPA in Canton, Ohio. Neil has been married to his wife Chris for thirty-five years. They have two adult children, Jason and Cindy.

Nick Plazak
Girls Varsity

Coach Plazak

Nick Plazak has been head coach for the Lady Vikings since 2004. He currently has a 38-25-11 record with the Vikings. Nick's coaching experiencing includes the Louisville High School boys' program and the North Canton JV boys program. He currently also serves as coach for the Strikers Club program. During the 2004 campaign he was named Federal League Coach of the Year.


Nick has been teaching science at Hoover High School since 2003. He attended Montana State University and earned his teaching certification from the University of Akron. He also has his masters in instructional technology from the University of Akron.

 
JUNIOR VARSITY COACHES

 

Peter Vandervaart
Boys JV White

Coach Vandervaart

Peter Vandervaart is in his first season as the JV White coach at Hoover High School He was the JV Orange coach for the 2006 season.  He has helped the team in the past as a summer coach and last season volunteered to be the goalkeeper coach.


He graduated from Hoover High School in June 2001 and was a varsity goalkeeper all four years. After graduating and from Hoover Peter attended Purdue University and received his Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in May 2005. He currently works as an engineer for Timken.


Gary Bodenschatz

Coach Bodenschatz


Gary Bodenschatz is in his first season as the full-time coach of the Hoover High School boys’ J.V. orange team.  He previously spent ten years at Timken Sr. High School where he coached as the varsity soccer assistant

He recently accepted the position of Interactive Media teacher at Hoover High School where he will begin teaching this fall. He spent the previous ten years teaching Graphic Design at Timken High School. Gary is a 1987 graduate of Hoover High School where he competed in the soccer program all four years and played varsity soccer in the ‘85 and ‘86 seasons. He graduated Cum Laude from the University of Akron with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He later earned his teaching certificate from Kent State University, and recently was awarded a Master of Arts in Education degree. Gary resides in North Canton with his wife, Nicole, and their four children, Alex, Genevieve, Arthur, and Katherine. 

 
Joe Schaefer

Coach Schaefer

Joe Schaefer is in his 13th season as a coach in the Hoover High School soccer programs;  which included four years with the boys' program and the previous nine with the girls' program.


A 1989 graduate of Hoover High School, Joe played soccer from 1985 - 1988. He graduated with a Marketing degree from the Kent State University Honors College and currently serves as the Marketing Coordinator at Main Street Gourmet. Joe and his wife, Amy, have three children and live in North Canton.

 

ASSISTANT COACHES

 
Paul Bluman
Boys Assistant

Coach Bluman

Paul Bluman is in his fourth year as the Boys assisstant varsity coach.  Paul is really excited about this year's team potential.  He helped in coaching the Hoover girls' goalkeepers during the 2005 season and has previous coaching experience for the North Canton Strikers Soccer Club as well as coaching track and field at the middle school level. He was an assistant varsity coach for Saint Thomas Aquinas for nine years with head coach Neil Baasten.


Paul is a lifelong Stark County resident and currently resides in Canton with his wife, Nancy. They have two children, Paul III and Mary, both living in Columbus, OH.

 

Brian Girdlestone

Coach Girdlestone

Brian has served as the assistant coach for the girls' varsity soccer team since 2005 after a previous year as a part of Hoover soccer program. He has previous coaching experience as head coach for Berkshire High School in Burton, Ohio.


Brian started playing soccer at the age of 4 in Sydney, Australia and was a 4 year varsity player. He graduated from St. Aloysius High School in Sydney and from Walsh University. Brian is married,  and he and his wife have four boys.

 

Sam Simmerman

Coach Simmerman

Sam Simmerman has been coaching for the Hoover High School girls' soccer program since 2006. Sam has coached for over 13 years including rec. league, club, and now high school.


He has coached for the Lake Soccer Club and the North Canton Strikers Club as well as organizing and coaching teams for Hoover players--indoor and outdoor leagues. Sam is a partner of the law firm of Krugliak, Wilkins, Griffiths & Dougherty Co., L.P.A.
